Chiropractors use a variety of adjustments to help each patient on an individual level. Specific techniques may be specific to one person’s preference versus another’s, and some techniques are doctor-recommended or specific depending upon what’s happening in the patient’s body. One of the gentlest methods a chiropractor can use is the activator adjustment.
In contrast to the manual adjustment, which requires specific manual thrusts to restore biomechanical function, the activator adjustment is a gentle adjustment of the spine. A spring-loaded activator instrument completes the adjustment, rather than a manual thrust. Some new activator instruments are even powered electronically. The adjustment is quick and low-force. One of the great things about this method is that it can be done in a variety of positions. The patient may be lying down, sitting, or standing.
Because the activator instrument provides low-force impulses quickly at specific points on the body, the body is far less likely to resist the treatment. The muscle is far less likely to tense because the instrument is so quick. This may also make the treatment more effective. Unlike a manual adjustment, there is no bending or twisting into strange positions. The force is controlled and localized, and the body doesn’t need to be put into compromised positions.
The activator adjustment is commonly used for neck or back pain. Chiropractors typically will use another type of adjustment method in conjunction with the activator adjustment. The activator adjustment is considered to be a safe adjustment for pain. Complications are rare. You should discuss the adjustment with your chiropractor and its benefits to you.
