Migraines sufferers are no strangers to pain and discomfort. It isn’t uncommon for them to experience feelings of desperation and helplessness as multiple treatment options fail to provide the relief they so desperately desire. If you yourself are a migraine sufferer and are trying to find an alternative to popping pills or struggling through the pain, a trip to the chiropractor might be just what you need.

The effectiveness of chiropractic care depends on the type of headache or migraine you are experiencing. Chiropractic care is typically sought out for help treating not only migraines, but tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches.

Migraines

Migraines are not simply characterized by a cluster of headaches. They typically also come with other symptoms like nausea, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound, and even blurred vision. Neuromuscular massages can help. This technique focuses on trigger points in the back, shoulders, and neck. A combination of this, physical therapy, and relaxation techniques can be beneficial.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches aren’t uncommon, especially if you find yourself keeping your head, neck, and shoulders in the same position for long periods of time (we’re talking to you, office job workers). These usually go away with normal over-the-counter pain relievers. However, if you experience chronic tension headaches, chiropractic care can prove beneficial. Low-load craniocervical mobilization is most often used. Greater force than is typically used in a spinal manipulation is applied to the neck joints. Patients are encouraged to perform regular stretches with this technique.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches may be caused by an injury or an issue with your neck. Pain typically starts at the back of the head before moving to the front. You may also experience pain in your arm or shoulder on the same side of your body. Unlike migraines and other types of headaches, this one doesn’t typically see improvement with medications. Chiropractors see individuals with this type of headache the most. To treat cervicogenic headaches, your chiropractor will focus on the cervical spine to complete a spinal manipulation. They may also use joint mobilization or deep neck flexion exercises. These techniques involve passive or active movements that stretch the deep neck flexor muscles.
